Obituary of Wayne Peter Remme

   Armour - Wayne Peter Remme, 90, died at Avantara Nursing Home in Armour on Friday, November 15, 2019. Funeral service will be Monday, November 18, 2019 at 10:30 AM at St. Peter Lutheran Church near Armour with burial following in Emanuel Lutheran Cemetery near Delmont. Visitation will be Sunday, November 17, 2019 from 5 - 7 PM at St. Peter Lutheran Church with prayer service at 7:00 PM. Arrangements by Koehn Bros. Funeral Home in Armour.

   Wayne Peter Remme was born on May 9, 1929, the third of six children to Gust Adolph and Martha Louise Wilhelmina (Bendt) Remme at Clear Lake, SD. He was baptized on June 26, 1942 and confirmed on July 5, 1942 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Luverne, MN. He graduated from Luverne High School on June 5, 1947. Wayne enlisted in the U.S. Navy (Seabees) on October 24, 1950. On January 9, 1953, Wayne and Verna M. Brenner were married at Grace Lutheran Church in Luverne, MN. Wayne was honorably discharged and received a National Defense and Good Conduct Medal on August 23, 1954. He graduated from Southern State Teacher’s College in Springfield, SD on May 29, 1958, with two degrees Radio and TV (Technician) and Vocation Education (B.S.).

   Wayne and Verna made their home in Delmont, SD, where Wayne worked as an industrial arts teacher. They moved to Melvin, IA, in August of 1962. He graduated from Iowa State University in School Administration (M.S.) on August 22, 1969. Wayne became a school principal and athletic administrator. After working briefly in Avoca, IA, he retired from education in Sanborn, IA in 1991. Wayne and Verna retired to Armour, SD, in 1999, close to where their life began.

   He taught Sunday School, served on Church Council, and did fix-it jobs from the roof to the basement. He enjoyed leather-tooling, woodworking, grooming the acreage, and using and maintaining his John Deere. He served as the liaison between the local VFW post and school to organize Memorial and Veteran’s Day programs, display flags, and helped build Veteran’s Memorial sites. He also drove the Douglas County Memorial Hospital ambulance.

   Wayne served his family faithfully: traveling to assist his children in home remodeling, grandparenting, and attending countless family events. He was devoted to his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Wayne truly had a servant’s heart and was always willing to help all who needed his many talents and services. On Friday, November, 15, 2019, the Good Lord called His servant home.

   Wayne is survived by his wife of 66 years, Verna Remme; children: Debra (Edward) Weirenga of Dorr, MI; Mark (Christi) of Iowa City, IA; Luann (David) Bohnet of Jefferson, IA; and Susan (Daniel) Hoeffner of Piedmont, SD; 10 grandchildren: Pam (Mark) Hoogwerf; Dianne (John) Wilhelm; Melissa (Howie) Prince; Avalyn Remme, Peter Remme; Neal (Jill) Bohnet; Jacob (Kimberly) Bohnet; Bethann (Caleb) Christensen; Zachary Hoeffner; and Melea Hoeffner; 10 great-grandchildren: Robert, Valerie, Eric, Brian Leo, Joseph, Heather, Sophie, Brody, Cole, and baby boy Christensen due in January of 2020.

   Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, four siblings: Marlene (John) Schwartz, Donald (LaVonne), Gale (Nell), and infant Leon; and granddaughter, Amanda.
