Obituary of Marcella Werning
Clayton - Marcella Werning, 84, passed way at her home near Emery, SD, surrounded by family on Sunday, November 26, 2017. Funeral service will be at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, 42654 272nd St., Clayton, SD, 57332, Saturday, December 2, 2017 at 10:30 AM with burial following at St. Peter's Lutheran Cemetery in Clayton. Visitation will be Saturday, December 2, 2017 from 9:00 - 10:30 AM at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Clayton. Arrangements by Koehn Bros. Funeral Home in Parkston.
Marcella and her twin sister, Maxine were born on the family farm southwest of Parkston to Edward D. and Anna Winter on February 12, 1933. She was baptized and confirmed at Eigenfeld Lutheran Church near Parkston. She attended country school through the eight grade, then helped out on the family farm and assisted relatives with child care and form work. She later worked at Priebe and Sons Produce and Hatchery, candling eggs.
On March 3, 1957, she was united in marriage to Elmer Werning at Salem Lutheran Church in Parkston. To this union, three children were worn, David, Lois, and Denise. They bought land and started their own farm west of Clayton. Marcella was a loving wife, mother, and helper on the farm, raising many geese and ducks through the years. She butchered and dressed many ducks and geese and made many goose down feather pillows. As a result, she was known as the Goose Lady. Marcella also loved to bake kuchen and was a wonderful cook.
Marcella was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church where she was a member of the choir for many years and taught Sunday School.
Marcella had a stroke in May of 2016. She was able to continue living on the farm with the help of her children, Lois, Denise, and David.
Grateful for having shared her life are her husband, Elmer of Emery, SD, son, David Werning of Emery, SD, daughters, Lois Werning and Denise Werning both of Sioux Falls, SD, two sisters, Anita Winter of Parkston, SD, and Geneva (Ervin) Winter of Mitchell, SD, sisters-in-law, Hilda Werning, Alvina Werning, and Linda Werning, and many nieces and nephews.
Marcella was preceded in death by her parents, twin sister, Maxine in infancy, brother, Harold in infancy, brother-in-law, Art Werning, Harold Huber, Marvin Werning, and Albert Werning, and sisters-in-law, Elma Huber and Syliva Huber.
