Obituary of Thomas Joseph Wagner

Sioux Falls – Thomas Joseph Wagner, 81, went to his heavenly home Monday, December 2, 2024 at Ava’s House.  Memorial mass will be Saturday, December 7 at 10:00 am at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Armour.  Visitation will be Friday, December 6 from 5 to 6 pm, with a prayer service at 6:00 pm, at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Armour.  A private, family burial will take place at a later time in Old Bon Homme Cemetery near Tyndall. Memorials would be preferred in lieu of flowers and may be directed to Ava's House.

Tom was born August 20, 1943 to Jerry and Alice (Volenec) Wagner in Omaha, NE. At an early age, he moved with his family to Wagner, SD. He attended a parochial boarding school in Tabor, SD through the 8th grade and graduated from Wagner High School in 1961. After graduation he worked on military silos in Western SD. Tom owned and operated an auto repair shop in Armour, SD where he also restored cars. He then became a highway superintendent for Douglas County and later worked for Meyerink Farm Service. He married Sharon Gorman on January 17, 2003. Tom was also a carpenter who built a house in Armour and completely restored the 100 year old home he and Sharon resided in. He enjoyed attending and participating in many car shows with his 1975 Chrysler Cordoba. In retirement, he continued restoring his 1987 Dodge pickup. He was a member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus. Tom enjoyed traveling, making sure Sharon made it to every family function.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Sharon; Sharon’s 4 children: Steve (Denise) Martinec of Sioux Falls, SD; Jill (Mike) Richardson of Ft. Pierre, SD; Tom (Lori) Martinec of Pierre, SD; and Carrie (Steve) Thompson of Sioux Falls, SD; 6 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; 5 siblings: Jerry (Ann) Wagner of Pierre, SD; Margaret (Gary) Wendt of Kearney, NE; Marjorie Wagner of Hull, IA; Jim Wagner of Mitchell, SD; and Judith Wagner of Rhode Island; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, William (Billy).
