Obituary of Mary Joy Vanden Hoek

Sioux Falls – Mary Joy Vanden Hoek, 73, went to her heavenly home Monday, October 28, 2024 at Sanford USD Medical Center.  Funeral service will be Friday, November 1 at 10:00 am, with visitation beginning at 9:00 am, at Harrison Community Church in Harrison.  Arrangements by Koehn Bros. Funeral Home in Armour.

Mary was born March 20, 1951 to Harold and Dorothy (Miersma) Kalkwarf in Parkersburg, IA.  She attended Parkersburg High School and graduated in 1969.  She then attended Dordt College in Sioux City, IA and gruated in 1973 with a degree in education.  She taught elementary school at Inwood Christian School in Inwood, IA.  She was united in marriage to LeRoy Vanden Hoek on June 21, 1974 in Parkersburg.  They were blessed with a chosen son, Ryan.  The couple lived and farmed near Corsica.  In additon to helping on the farm, Mary worked at the Corsica Good Samaritan Center for over 30 years.  She was a member of Harrison Community Church and enjoyed gardening and crochetting.

Grateful for having shared her life are her son, Ryan Vanden Hoek of Sioux Falls, 2 brothers, Curt Kalkwarf of Parkersburg, IA and Craig (Melody) Kalkwarf of Parkersburg, IA and 5 brothers and sisters-in-law:  Kenneth (Margie) Vanden Hoek of Corsica, Lillian (Jay) Meyerink of Holland, MI, Roger (Linda) Vanden Hoek of Hull, IA, Calvin (Lois) Vanden Hoek of Everson, WA, and Dan Vanden Hoek of Corsica.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, LeRoy on November 1, 2018; and in-laws, Tony and Herena Vanden Hoek.
