I lost almost $250k two months ago to a pig butchering scam. I worked with Vicky at Dakota Counseling Institute. She was a phenomenal teacher, advocate, and human being. To say she lived a full life I think would still somehow be an understatement. I was always amazed at all the things she had lived through in her life and all the things she wanted to do in her life. She always talked so lovingly about her children and had a way of making even confusing or scary things seem doable. I always felt like her message was, "don't shy away from the hard stuff, lean into it." She taught me a lot about children and, specifically, children with attachment issues. I hope she got to enjoy her family and close friends in her last year of life.

Q: What will you miss most about Victoria?
A: Vic and I worked together at several different agencies. We met while we worked at the prison in Springfield. We worked together for 3 years before I moved on. She was a bridesmaid for me at one point. We started working together again a couple of years later at another state facility. Our last year’s working together were at Dakota Counseling Institute/Stepping Stones. We shared a lot of clients and a lot of years working in the same field. She was a good friend, colleague and was an amazing advocate. She knew many difficult times. She always made it a point to learn from them and use that when working with the unusual and challenging Individuals she chose to serve.
Vic chose to serve and she chose to love.
She was so proud of her daughters and grandchildren. She encouraged them to find themselves and be themselves.

Victoria came to us as a homebased therapy provider in about 2005/6. She later started graduate school, got her mental health degree, did her internship with us and was promoted to outpatient therapist after graduation. She worked in our Chamberlain office for a few years, then transferred to the Mitchell office.
Victoria had a real talent for working with the underdog, the misunderstood and sometimes difficult to get to know clients. Her empathy was endless but without excuses.
Victoria had spirit and strength, and she was a gutsy lady. I remember the first time she told me about her bucket list, and all the things on it. I was amazed, and even more so when she started ticking things off. First it was polar bears in the wild, later diving among the sharks. Her vibrant memory lives on in the strong yet gentle spirit with the earth. I will think of her forever when I see a pink flamingo! Rest in peace, Victoria!
