Obituary of Cornelius Spaans
Corsica - Cornelius "Cornie" Spaans, 88, died Thursday, September 28, 2017 at Good Samaritan Center in Corsica, SD. Funeral service will be Tuesday, October 3, 2017 at 10:30 AM at Netherlands Reformed Congregation in Corsica with burial following in Graceland Cemetery in Corsica. Visitation will be Monday, October 2, 2017 from 6:30 - 8:00 PM at Netherlands Reformed School Gym in Corsica with a prayer service at 8:00 PM. Arrangements by Koehn Bros. Funeral Home in Armour.
Cornelius "Cornie" Spaans was born on February 9, 1929 to Dick and Tena (Zomer) Spaans on the family farm in Douglas County, SD. He attended Storm Country School in Douglas County through the 8th grade. As a young man he worked for Bud Van Zee and in Grand Rapids, MI. While in Grand Rapids, he met Pauline Staal, who he married on February 14, 1950. They moved to Corsica, where he, along with his brother Henry, started Spaans Brothers Trucking, retiring in 1991. After retirement, he served as Douglas County Commissioner for 8 years. Cornie and Pauline enjoyed many winters in Texas, and 2 trips to Netherlands. He also enjoyed many hunting and fishing trips. Cornie was a member of the Netherlands Reformed Congregation in Corsica and South Dakota Trucking Association. He moved to the Good Samaritan Center in Corsica in 2015 where he died on Thursday, September 28, 2017 at the age of 88.
Cornie is survived by his wife, Pauline of Corsica, SD, 6 children, Rich (Jan) Spaans of Sioux Falls, SD, Connie (Gary) Wolbrink of Sioux Falls, SD, Jim (Renee) Spaans of Great Falls, MT, Arleen Weerheim of Madison, SD, Nancy (Vern) Hill of Plankinton, SD, and Paul (Dawn) Spaans of Chaska, MN, 4 brothers, Dick (Madelyn) Spaans of Grand Rapids, MI, Leonard (Liz) Spaans of Larchwood, IA, Andy (Doris) Spaans of Mitchell, SD and Ben (Betty) Spaans of Corsica, SD, 21 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, special family friend, Christy Hollenbrandse of Netherlands, and many other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents, son-in-law, Dale Weerheim, sister, Nellie Bouma, 7 brothers, Herman, John, Henry, Jim, Ade, Marv, and Albert.
Memorial would be prefered in lieu of flowers to be directed to Netherlands Reformed Congregation or Netherlands Reformed School.
