Obituary of Leona Viola Kost
Leona (Friederich) Kost or “Onie” of Parkston passed away peacefully on June 28th, 2017 at the age 86 at Borman Manner. She was under hospice care after a short battle with pneumonia. Onie has been a long time resident at the Borman manner. Funeral service will be Saturday, July 1 at 10:30 am at Salem United Church of Christ in Parkston. Visitation will be Friday, June 30 from 5 to 7 pm with a 7:00 pm prayer service at Salem United Church of Christ in Parkston. Arrangements by Koehn Bros. Funeral Home in Parkston.
Onie was born July 28th, 1930 to Gottlieb and Marie (Grosz) Friederich in Bon Homme County, SD. She was one of twelve children, with she being the 2nd youngest. Onie grew up on the farm helping her family. She was married to her loving husband, Erwin on August 2nd, 1953 at the Denewitz Lutheran church near Tripp, SD.
Onie was a faithful and loving mother and farmer’s wife. While on the farm, Onie loved gardening and taking care of the flowers around the house. Onie had a wonderful bubbly attitude. She was a meticulous house cleaner and always enjoyed the help from her daughter. Onie was a member of Salem United Church of Christ and taught Sunday School for several years. For entertainment, she loved to dance to polka music, quilting, bowling and playing card games with family. They retired in 1995 and moved their home into Parkston. Shortly after moving into Parkston, Onie was exhibiting signs of and was later diagnosed with Altzheimer’s disease which led to her being admitted to the Borman Manner Nursing home. During this time and until her death, the family made regular visits to the home.
She is survived by her husband Erwin, Annette (David’s wife) and her remaining brother Leonard and his wife Peggy. Surviving children include daughter-in-law Annette (Holman), Diane and husband Orlyn from Madison, SD, and Kelly and his wife Catina of Mitchell, SD. Grandchildren include Jacob Kost, Patrick & Ashley Olfert from Sioux Falls, Tyler Olfert from Madison, Kristina & Colin Neuharth from Bismarck, ND, Brittney Olfert from Yankton, SD. Great grandchildren include Kjerstin and Kaelyn Neuharth.
She was preceded in death by her son, David who died suddenly in 2012, her parents, and her 11 siblings.
