My first memory of cousin Pete was his playing his guitar and singing "Peek-a-boo, I see you, hiding behind that chair" when I was about three years old at a large extended family holiday event. I admired him from that day forward for his goodness, humor, energy and insights.
I have told many of my nursing colleagues about the time several years ago when Pete’s physician recommended that he get a cardiac stress test. But Pete refused because the $1000 charge would mean he would not be able to afford his upcoming Alaskan fishing trip, so Pete chose the trip instead. On one of the oceon excursions during that trip Pete got a large determined salmon on the end of his fishing line which, after an intensive hour long fight, he finally landed into the boat. In the subsequent photo, it appears that Pete is standing and holding up the fish. However Pete said that by then he was so exhausted he could only lean on the Native American guide who was holding up both him and his fish. And the guide then commented “Well Pete, it looks like you just passed your stress test!”
Pete was a joker, always ready for a laugh. He was curious and caring, reached out to people and tried to make things right. He also clearly loved his family and very much admired wife Carol. During a visit to their home one summer I noticed a high school reunion photo posted on their fridge. Pete walked by, pointed to Carol in the photo and said “Look at that! Look at that! I married the prettiest girl in the class and she still is!”
I have many memories of good times and long talks with Pete, and also Carol, which I will always treasure.

I met Pete when I was 15 years old, he was looking for someone to help on the farm. I worked for him the next 3 summers. He was a great boss and even a better friend. I remember putting up hay and Pete singing hymns on the tractor, hunting prairie dogs, and taking a nap after dinner on the living room floor. Pete and Carol’s faith in God was genuine as we always had devotions after dinner. Their example was a inspiration to me and helped my own spiritual growth. I will always have fond memories of Pete and he will be greatly missed, but our comfort is knowing he is now in the presence of our Lord. My prayers are with you all.

Pete was a sweet man that will be missed by many, and I will forever cherish the time our family spent with him and his wife over the years. He had such a gentle personality with a cute sense of humor that always put a smile on my face. I will miss our conversations over cookies and milk and listening him play his harmonica. He loved his family and it showed in everything he did. The world was a better place just by having him in it. I will take comfort in knowing that he is with the Lord and free of the burdens he carried while on this earth. His memory will never be forgotten as his life impacted many. Sending love and hugs to his family, especially his beloved wife and best friend Carol. We love you and pray that God holds your heart in his hands as I know it is broken. I know he will be smiling down on us until we meet again.
Love,
Nikki and family
