Harold T. Tiede was born December 8, 1918 to Gustav D. and Pauline (Koenig) Tiede in Parkston, SD. He attended country school near the farm through the 8th grade and then attended and graduated from Parkston High School. He served in the United States Army during World War II. During his service, he was stationed in California, Hawaii, the Philippines and the Pacific Theater. After being honorably discharged, Harold returned home. He was united in marriage to Eldora Bender on February 28, 1946 at Plum Creek Baptist Church near Emery, SD. He was a farmer all his life. In the early years, he was a dairy farmer and delivered milk door to door and to the grocery stores in Parkston. He retired from farming in 1984 and moved into Parkston. Harold was a member of the Zion Congregational that later became Salem Congregational Church and then Salem UCC. He served on many church boards including Deacon, Sunday School Superintendent and Sunday School teacher. He was also a member of the American Legion, VFW, and the church Men's Choir for over 50 years. Harold loved people and visiting with family and friends. He played cards and liked to tell stories, especially about his army experiences. He cut hair during that time and once cut General Douglas McArthur's hair while in the Philippines. Harold went to his heavenly home Saturday, April 22, 2017 at Avera Bormann Manor in Parkston at the age of 98.
Grateful for having shared his life are his 3 children: Merlyn (Kathy) Tiede of Parkston; Douglas (Cleo) Tiede of Hitchcock, SD; and Linda Tiede Frey of Omaha, NE; 6 grandchildren: Tonya (Brian) Webb; Jason (Michelle) Tiede; Chad (Briana) Tiede; Kari Jo (Brandon Barnes); Dustin (Erin) Frey; and Kali (Michael) Evans; 11 great-grandchildren: Sean, Summer, Shad, Collin, Dylan, Hazel, Alice, John, Kalissa, Kalin and Maddox; a sister-in-law, Irene Tiede of Parkston; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Eldora; a sister, Juanita Lindeman and 3 brothers, Arnett, Ruben, and Vernon Tiede.
