When I started with the old ASCS, now FSA, I trained with Leon for a three week period. It was definitely an eye opener and Leon showed me how to keep things going but to always give credit to the employees. He most definitely knew that the program techs could make or break a County Executive Director. Since that time I, along with a core group of employees and retirees, traveled with Leon to all of our NASCOE conventions from 1990 thru last year. There are just too many stories from these travels, but we knew him as Shamu from a pretty impressive belly flop he made while swimming in a hotel pool with the kids. He was great with the youngsters and they always gravitated to him as he was half kid himself. South Dakota hosted the national convention in 2005 and he brought a school bus out and was Co-chair with transportation along with helping the Youth group for their activities all week. He was a natural and they loved him.
Leon always had a twinkle in his eye and if he could tease or get a joke over on someone, he would do it and Laugh, laugh, laugh! There were many games of cribbage, and few toddies, and more jokes. One day I received in the mail a package from Shamu that contained a very large pair of mens briefs. Three pair had been left in one of our convention rooms, "found" their way into Shamu's golf bag. Several months later all three pair had been sent to someone else. No one ever did claim those briefs but Leon had lots of fun sending them out!
Leon my friend, we will miss you and never, ever forget you. RIP dear sir.

Will be thinking of Leon Edlund, he was liked by many people in Dupree and other places he lived. Enjoyed working for him and
going to conventions with him. Spent some Christmas at our house in Dupree.

Leon was my softball teammate in Dupree and we had a great team and my golf partner also! He taught me how to play better and I still have some of his personal clubs he gave to me. But most of all he was my good friend and a great guy!! With a heavy heart Marc Birkeland.

“The” Mr. Edlund will always be remembered, as he made my senior year in the new high school at Sisseton quite memorable! A great guy, whom I got to know a lot better when he bartended at the golf course. He was always cordial and humorous & fun to visit with. His passing is so very sad and my heart & sympathy goes out to all his family and friends who will miss him greatly. Too many nice folks have gone to heaven way too soon. God bless Leon’s family!

Lots of good times with Leon. When he lived in Dupree at Christmas time my mother would invite Leon over for Lutefisk, and when he was finished he would rub his belly and say"his batteries were recharged for another year." Leon was a genuine man and he will be missed. Dale Johnson
