Lake Andes - Bill Evans, 68, died at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls on Monday, January 30, 2017. Funeral service will be Friday, February 3 at 10:30 am at St. Mark's Catholic Church in Lake Andes. Visitation will be Thursday, February 2 from 5 to 7 pm with a 7:00 pm prayer service at St. Mark's Catholic Church in Lake Andes.
Bill was born June 30, 1948 to Lester Hoyle and Mona K. (Johnson) Evans in Geddes, SD. He attended country school through 8th grade at Moore #8 Country School, graduating from Lake Andes High School in 1966. He attended one year at Southern State College in Springfield. Over his lifetime, Bill held a variety of jobs. They include a heavy equipment operator for the United States Corps of Engineers, a gas station attendant in Yankton while attending college in Springfield, then from 1967-1972, at the Lake Andes CO-OP Service Station. During this time, he drove a race car with Lyle Bergin at the racing circuit. Later he raced with his son and brother Jerry at the Lake Andes Speedway.
Bill’s number one love of his life was the farm and he lived on the family farm his entire life. After his dad died in 1972, Bill stepped in and helped his mother with the farm, while helping to guide his younger brothers and sister. He enjoyed working the soil, watching the crops grow, harvest, animals, sunrises and sunsets.
Bill married Janet Dahlgren in 1974 at the First Lutheran Church in Lake Andes. Two children, Dennis and Patricia, were blessed to their union. Together they continued to farm, as well as milking cows, raising hogs, beef cattle, sheep, and chickens.
Bill served as an Elder at First Presbyterian Church, a supervisor and clerk for over 26 years for the Goose Lake Township, and on the Lake Andes CO-OP elevator board starting in 1982. He served as President of the elevator board from 1990 to the present.
He also drove bus for Andes Central School District and worked for the ASCS/FSA office as a field man checking bins and crops. He enjoyed helping his son with their business, Evans Heating and Cooling. He spent 24 years working as a 911-Dispatcher/Jailer for Charles Mix County Law Enforcement Center, retiring in June 2016. While working at the Law Enforcement Center, Bill continued to farm using his time off for planting and harvesting. Later, he hired and enjoyed working with the Ray Johanneson family, as needed.
Along with his love for farming, Bill enjoyed golfing, fishing, attending his children and grandchildren’s activities, going to coffee at the elevator with his brother Jerry and spending time with his family, especially during the annual Evans Family Pheasant Hunt. Moreover, he enjoyed his grandchildren and did not mind when they jumped on the bed to wake him up. Bill is survived by his wife of 42 years, a son Dennis (Kerry) of Yankton and a daughter Patricia (Dave) Ronfeldt of Lake Andes; seven grandchildren and six step-grandchildren; four brothers: Steve Evans of Mitchell, Jerry Evans of Lake Andes, Dan (Roxanne) Evans of Centerville, Ron (Jeannine) Evans and one sister: Betty (Eugene) Grate both of Yankton. He is preceded in death by his parents, a brother Walter, sisters-in-law Ronda, Jane, and Evelyn, and two nephews, Kurtis and Benjamin.
